Design Thinking & User Experience Design (UXD) Training
Google Headquarters, Kitchener

During this one-day practical hands-on workshop you will work in teams at Google to conceptualize, sketch, and test ideas around the development of an innovation new product, new service or the radical innovation of processes.

Did you know?
UX professionals are in high demand and have been ranked among the top 100 best jobs. This is likely due to the fact that UX professionals are valued in a wide range of industries including retail, medicine, technology, finance, education and government. User experience (UX) designers are trained ICT professionals who contribute to new and emerging media and technologies.
They do this by:
• Gathering and analyzing information about users and their goals, needs and tasks;
• Creating design solutions;
• Iterating designs through prototyping, testing and evaluation; and
• Measuring efficiency, effectiveness and satisfaction with their designs.

Bus departs at 8:50am and returns by 1:00pm
Training time runs from 9:30am-12:30pm

Lunch is provided.
You will earn 1 elective certification.

Tuesday, October 10, 2018
Film in a Day Workshop
TIFF Bell Lightbox, Toronto

Are you interested in screenwriting, pitching, shot composition, sound, directing and acting? Then start out by learning the basics with an on-set and film industry experience. Students will work with a prosumer level of equipment, and will take on the crew and cast roles themselves, with instructors providing the outline of what each role entails, and ensures the filming unrolls as a professional production would.
Note: Due to time constraints, editing film and lighting techniques are not explored.

Bus departs at 7:45am and will return by 4:00pm.

2 DAYS – Oct. 30 & Nov. 7, 2018 Lighting & Audio Staging for Performances Workshop
Angus Audio @ St. Benedict CSS

Under the guidance and expertise of experience staff from Angus Audio, you will participate in the technical staging for the pre-production on October 31, the day before the Arts Showcase on November 1 to set up for the event.

This includes setting up lighting and audio based on the show’s schedule and lineup of sets. You will understand both the theory and practical components of technical staging with regards to microphones, school sound system, hookups and troubleshooting common issues like feedback and achieving a balanced sound.
With the lighting portion, you will learn how to properly hang lights and adjust their focus (while on a ladder) based on the set list and acts occurring the next day.

You are required to attend both days:
Electrical Safety & Ladder Training on October 30
Lighting & Audio Staging on November 7

You are strongly encouraged to attend the Arts Showcase on November 8th at St. Benedict to view the production, but this is not mandatory.

Training runs from 9:30am until 2:30pm.
Lunch is provided
You will earn all 3 elective certifications needed for the Arts & Culture/ICT Major.

Leadership, Problem Solving & Communication Skills Training
KW YMCA Outdoor Centre, St. Clements

During this one day session, you will work in groups focusing on initiative tasks which include leadership, problem solving & communication to build on these skills. Outdoor education staff will challenge you to understand how these 3 skills are connected, how they affect the workplace and other business situations.
You will also get a chance to participate in low and high rope tasks!

Bus departs at 8:50am and returns by 2:40pm
Training time runs from 9:30-2:00pm

Innovation, Creativity & Entrepreneurship (ICE) Challenge Day
Communitech Hub , Downtown Kitchener

During this session you will work with designers, artists and managers from local companies to help them solve a current CHALLENGE they face in their company.
Employers will explain their CHALLENGE and you will work in small groups to find a solution. Collaborate with companies who will listen to your solutions and possibly implement them. Click here for the agenda and pictures

3D Printing & Scanning
Tinker Truck

3D printers are being used around the world in so many ways! Printing art, frosting on cakes, and other things like wrenches, and even houses. Take this 1 day training session to learn how this is possible, and how you can print your own product in your school or community.
In this session, you will learn how to make models that move and articulate right off the print bed! Experiment with different Computer Aided Design (CAD) software, including those you can use at home for free. Plus! Experiment with 3D scanning, discuss different kinds of materials to print with, and learn how to design new real-world object to sell, play with or solve problems.

Training is held at Resurrection CSS from 9:30am-2:30pm

2 DAYS: Tuesday Feb. 12 & Thursday Feb. 14, 2019
Portfolio Development Training
Button Factory Arts, Waterloo

Your portfolio is an important part of your application to any studio based program. In this intensive workshop we will discuss what makes a strong portfolio, and how to set yourself up for success. Learn some insights and tips on how to make your portfolio stand out.
For ICT Students, photography, game design and animation can and will be explored.
The workshop will function as a mock interview, individual discussion, group critique and open studio time.

Please bring a selection of your artwork (digital files can be included here) and a sketchbook. Limited computers are available. Please bring your own laptop/tablet if possible (if presenting digital files).

You must attend on both days to earn your certifications!

Training time is from 9:30am-1:30pm.
Lunch is provided.

Graphic Art & Design Training

During this 2 day, hands-on workshop, you will learn more about creating graphics and logos. Using Adobe Illustrator, you will use the drawing and tracing tools to create a logo. Using Adobe InDesign, you will learn how to work with text, graphics and layout tools to create a poster for the SHSM program.

You must attend on both days to earn your certifications!

Computer Aided Design/Manufacturing
(CAD/CAM) Training

Are you interested in 2D and 3D computer-aided design and manufacturing?
During this one day session, you will learn more about AutoCAD for use in mechanical drawings. In this session you will create your own completed drawing of an object using the latest version of this software. You will also design a manufacturing toolpath using MasterCAM X9 for the same part to understand how your drawing becomes reality!

Plus! Learn more about how AudoCAD applies to the workplace in today’s industries. You’ll also receive an explanation of manual CNC programming.

Training time is from 9:00am-2:00pm.

Animation Training
SheepDog Animation School, Waterloo

SheepDog Animation is an International Award-Winning Studio (including Disney/Pixar), specializing in 2D, Stop Motion, Classical and 3D Animation. Learn from top industry expert, Alice Sinkner, who graduated from Sheridan College Graduate and went on to illustrate the works of Rugrats, Arthur, Franklin the Turtle and many more.
During this 2 day workshop you will receive an introduction to the animation industry, learn about classical, stop motion, 3D computer animation, augmented reality and children book illustration. You will also divide into groups based on your interest in animation types, and create your own animated movie.

In groups, you will learn about the cameras and software techniques, story-boarding, character modelling, character rotation and much more.

You must attend on both days to earn your certifications!

A programmable logic controller (PLC) or programmable controller is an industrial digital computer which has been ruggedized and adapted for the control of manufacturing processes, such as assembly lines, or robotic devices, or any activity that requires high reliability control and ease of programming and processes.

During this workshop, you will learn more about what PLCs are, how they are used and the types of industries they are applied to.
You will learn about the basic wiring of  components and ladder programming.
