Semester 1

Safe Food Handling Certification
In Your Hospitality Class
Speak to your teacher today!

If you are taking a Hospitality course this semester, you should receive safe food handling training during class (and SHSM will cover the cost of the certification issued from the Region of Public Health)!
The Safe Food Handling Certification will help you work in the kitchens of restaurants, retirement homes and other hospitality settings. This is a great certification to help you find a part-time job, or for a future career in the hospitality industry!

Talk to your Hospitality Teacher about this training session!

You will earn 2 elective certifications


2 Days – October 9 & 10, 2018
Global Positioning Satellite (GPS), Mapping & Compass Certification
Shades Mill – Grand River Conservation Authority


Locating points on a map and understanding how GPS works is helpful in the tourism field. Not only does it help you to measure and locate objects from a distance, but you will learn about topographical maps, positioning, and how GPS works in this 2 day training session.

You must attend on both days to earn your certification.

Bus departs at 8:50am and returns by 3:30pm
Training time runs from 9:30am-3:00pm

Lunch is provided.
You will earn 1 elective certification.

Tuesday, October 30, 2018
Leadership, Problem Solving & Communication Skills Training
KW YMCA Outdoor Centre, St. Clements

During this one day session, you will work in groups focusing on initiative tasks which include leadership, problem solving & communication to build on these skills. Outdoor education staff will challenge you to understand how these 3 skills are connected, how they affect the workplace and other business situations.
You will also get a chance to participate in low and high rope tasks!

Bus departs at 8:50am and returns by 2:40pm
Training time runs from 9:30-2:00pm

Lunch is provided.
You will earn 1 elective certification.

2 DAYS: Wednesdays, Nov. 21 & 28, 2018
Standard First Aid & CPR-C Training
St. John’s Ambulance, Kitchener

Every employer wants to have a safe worker! Take this certification to learn how to assist other’s when in need. Plus, add it to your resume, as it’ll help you find a part time job! After completing this two day training session you will receive 2 certifications in CPR-C and Standard First Aid.

You must attend on both days to earn your certifications!

Training time is from 9:45am-4:15pm on both days

Lunch is provided.
You will earn 2 mandatory certifications

Mexican inspired Cooking & Spices
Local Chef, Kitchener Market

Learn from a local Chef  how to prepare and work with Mexican spices during this Mexican inspired cooking workshop.
Learn when to use, and the difference between, corn vs. flour for tortillas & tacos, as you fill these with Chorizo or Chiken and mole. Prepare Guacamole, Picco de gallo while making chips from scratch. A sample of Mexican street food and a demonstration of Temale’s will also be featured during this 1 day workshop.

Training time runs from 9:30-1:30pm

Lunch is provided.

Semester 2

Tuesday March 19, 2019
Specialized Care: Nutrition & Dietary Considerations
Zehrs Markets, Kitchener

Interested in learning more about nutrition or considering a career as a Dietitian? This one day training will provide you with a basic understanding of the Dietitian field, as you learn about meal planning through the use of the Canada’s Food Guide.  Working with a group, you will also complete an activity  on how to assess a client food record. A label reading activity and knife skills demonstration will also be part of this hands-on day.

Plus, learn about the variety of careers available in this field as you experience the uniqueness of working as a Dietitian for a local grocery store. See how you can educate customers in the store, and learn about the nutritious foods offered.

Training time runs from 9:30am-1:30pm

Lunch is provided.
You will earn 2 elective certifications.

Attraction & Festival Event Management Training
Conestoga College, Doon Campus

Recreation, Sports Business, Art, Culture and Tourism are all connected through our $88.5 Billion Dollar Tourism industry in Canada
You will learn how to co-ordinate events by understanding what is needed for short and long term event plans. Remember! This can include everything from fundraising events, music festivals, the Olympics, Oktoberfest and so much more! By taking this training you will learn how to effectively plan and co-ordinate events.

Plus! You will understand how tourism is essential to sport, recreational, leisure and business purposes.

Training time is from 9:00am-2:00pm.
Lunch is provided.
You will earn 2 elective certifications.

Summer Training

HOW DOES IT WORK?

1. Call St. John’s Ambulance below to set up a training session (you cannot register online if SHSM is to pay for the training).

2. You MUST CALL St. John’s Ambulance (do not register online) to inform them:
– your name & school
– you’re a student of the Specialist High Skills Major program
– you’re a student with the Waterloo Catholic School Board
– you need CPR Level C & Standard First Aid

3. Attend training on the date you selected.
*NOTE: You will be charged a fee if you do not attend

4. St. John’s will invoice the SHSM program. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PAY, and your training will be listed on your progress report by the end of the summer!

3. Complete online training on your own time.
