Leadership Skills Training
Training Provider: Common Compass

The focus of this training will be:
– Understanding the role of emotionally intelligent leadership in the workplace and developing skills in how to handle these dilemmas
– Developing communication skills for effective problem solving in workplace culture
– Understanding how inclusion can promote an effective workplace culture
– Understanding and implementing various leadership styles and approaches

Training time is from 9:00am-2:30pm.

Training will take place at St. David CSS

Lunch is provided.
You will earn 2 elective certification(s).

October 15 & 16, 2019
GPS Training
Shades Mill, Cambridge

Locating points on a map and understanding how GPS works is a very valuable skill. Not only does it help you to measure and locate objects from a distance, but you will also learn about
topographical maps, positioning, and how GPS works in this 2 day training session.

You must attend on both days to earn your certification.

Lunch is provided.
You will earn 1 certification.

Standard First Aid & CPR Level C Training
St. John’s Ambulance, Cambridge

Every employer wants to have a safe worker! Take this certification to learn how to assist other’s when in need.
Learn how to perform: adult, child and infant CPR, choking procedures for all ages, how to use barrier devices, AED (Automated External Defibrillation), and more.

Plus, add this training to your resume, as it will help you find a part time job!

Earn up to two SHSM certifications!

You must attend on both days to earn your certifications!

Training time is: 9:30 am – 4:30pm

AERIAL MANLIFTS PRESENT CERTAIN RISKS AND CHALLENGES TO THE OPERATOR. PRIOR TO TRUSTING ANY EMPLOYEE WITH THE TASK OF OPERATING AN AERIAL MANLIFT, COMPREHENSIVE CERTIFICATION TRAINING IS MANDATORY. THIS COURSE MEETS OR EXCEEDS ANY/ALL STANDARDS AND LEGISLATION (CSA, ANSI, THE OHSA AND/OR ANY MOL GUIDELINES FOR SAFE OPERATION/MAINTENANCE)

Lockout/Tagout
Grand River Occupational Health and Safety, Cambridge

Lockout Tagout (LOTO) protects a worker by preventing others from turning on equipment or from a release of energy while working on or servicing equipment and machinery. This course will introduce participants to Lockout Tagout requirement, procedures for affixing appropriate lockout devices or tag out devices to energy isolating devices, and to otherwise disable machines or equipment to prevent unexpected re-energizing, start up or release of stored energy in order to prevent injury to workers.

Course Outline
– Introduction to electrical safety
– Lockout and Definitions
– Lockout Devices
– Lockout procedures, verification of de-energization
– Individual versus group lockout, shift changes, lockbox, lock removal
– Risk and hazard assessment, engineering safeguards, warning and alerting, and communication

Upon completion of the course, participants will be issued a three (3) years valid certificate showing proof of training.

Ergonomics Training
Grand River Occupational Health and Safety, Cambridge

This course will provide workers with the appropriate work practices and workstation set-ups that will reduce ergonomic discomfort and stress associated with repetitive tasks or straining positions, and take effective steps to prevent the onset of Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs).

Course Outline:
– Introduction to Ergonomics
– Musculoskeletal Disorders
– Common causes of work-related MSDs
– Ergonomics Risk Factors
– Workstation Layout
– Controls and Preventive measures

Ladder Safety Training
Grand River Occupational Health and Safety, Cambridge

Improper use of a ladder could cause significant injuries. Ladder safety training provide the necessary knowledge and skills required to reduce or eliminate worker injuries.

Learning Objectives:
– Upon completion of this course the trainee should be able to:
○ Identify various types and grades of ladders
○ Identify ladder hazards and common causes of accident
○ Understand the different applications of ladders and the importance of proper selection.
○ Know how to safely setup and use a ladder.  Know how to inspect, store, maintain and properly care for ladders.
○ Understand safe methods of climbing and descending ladders
○ Know how to store and maintain a ladder
Course Outline:
– Introduction to ladder safety and fall prevention
– Types of ladders and their applications
– Potential hazards and common causes of accident
– Proper ladder selection, inspection and use
– Proper care, storage and maintenance of ladders

HOW DOES IT WORK?

!!! SHSM will cover the cost of your CPR Level C & Standard First Aid!!!

*please note that the cost of the blended learning course will not be covered. Please call St. John Ambulance to register for the two-day course to take advantage of this certification free of cost.*

1. Call St. John’s Ambulance below to set up a training session (you cannot register online if SHSM is to pay for the training).

2. You MUST CALL St. John’s Ambulance (do not register online) to inform them:
– your name & school
– you’re a student of the Specialist High Skills Major program
– you’re a student with the Waterloo Catholic School Board
– you need CPR Level C & Standard First Aid

3. Attend training on the date you selected.
*NOTE: You will be charged a fee if you do not attend

4. St. John’s will invoice the SHSM program. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PAY, and your training will be listed on your progress report by the end of the summer!

 

HOW DOES IT WORK?

2. Email SHSM@wcdsb.ca with your:
– Name, school, major and type of training you’d like to take

3. Wait three days for the activation and then complete online training on your own time.

4. Email SHSM@wcdsb.ca to confirm you’ve completed training
(It may take up to two weeks for it to appear on your SHSM record)
