Ethics for Business Training
Training Provider: Common Compass

In today’s profit driven world, making ethical decisions can fall by the wayside. Great business leaders understand that ethical decision making is not only the ‘right’ thing to do, but it is also good for the bottom line.
In this interactive session, students will learn about the ethics involved in managing teams, Corporate Social Responsibility, and how to use reflective practice to make ethical decisions in a diverse world. Case scenarios, team competitions, and other participatory activities will be used.

Training time is from 9:00am-2:30pm.

Training will take place at St. Mary High School

Lunch is provided.
You will earn 1 elective certification(s).

Leadership Skills Training
Training Provider: Common Compass

The focus of this training will be:
– Understanding the role of emotionally intelligent leadership in the workplace and developing skills in how to handle these dilemmas
– Developing communication skills for effective problem solving in workplace culture
– Understanding how inclusion can promote an effective workplace culture
– Understanding and implementing various leadership styles and approaches

Training time is from 9:00am-2:30pm.

Training will take place at St. Mary’s High School

Lunch is provided.
You will earn 2 elective certification(s).


November 12, 2019
I.C.E Challenge Day
Business Education Partnership

During this session you will develop your Innovative, Creative and Entrepreneurial (ICE) Skills, as you work with designers, artists and managers from local companies to help them solve a current CHALLENGE they face in their company.

Employers will explain their CHALLENGE and you will work in small groups to find a solution. Collaborate with companies who will listen to your solutions and possibly implement them

Training time is: 9:00 am – 2:30pm

Lunch is provided.
You will earn 1 elective certification(s).


This is a 2-Day Training!
November 13 & 20, 2019
Standard First Aid & CPR Level C Training
St. John’s Ambulance, Cambridge

Every employer wants to have a safe worker! Take this certification to learn how to assist other’s when in need.
Learn how to perform: adult, child and infant CPR, choking procedures for all ages, how to use barrier devices, AED (Automated External Defibrillation), and more.

Plus, add this training to your resume, as it will help you find a part time job!

Earn up to two SHSM certifications!

You must attend on both days to earn your certifications!

Training time is: 9:30 am – 4:30pm

Lunch is provided.
You will earn 2 mandatory certification(s).

On-Campus Business Experience Day
University of Guelph

Interested in learning about the business side of Food and Agriculture? In this interactive and immersive on-campus experience you will engage with professors in the Ontario Agricultural College at the University of Guelph, and get a chance to view campus with a campus tour.

You will also learn the basics of effective public speaking and will then have a chance to wow the crowd with your creative and fun pitch for a commonly consumed food item. Each group will receive a different food product and will have a short five minutes to gain buy-in from the audience for your marketing pitch.

Please fill out University of Guelph’s IMAGE CONSENT Form and bring with you on the day of the trip

Training time is: 9:30 am – 2:00pm

Lunch is provided.
You will earn 1 elective certification(s).


Semester 2

Summer Training

Take training in your OWN time


!!! SHSM will cover the cost of your CPR Level C & Standard First Aid!!!

*please note that the cost of the blended learning course will not be covered. Please call St. John Ambulance to register for the two-day course to take advantage of this certification free of cost.*

1. Call St. John’s Ambulance below to set up a training session (you cannot register online if SHSM is to pay for the training).

2. You MUST CALL St. John’s Ambulance (do not register online) to inform them:
– your name & school
– you’re a student of the Specialist High Skills Major program
– you’re a student with the Waterloo Catholic School Board
– you need CPR Level C & Standard First Aid

3. Attend training on the date you selected.
*NOTE: You will be charged a fee if you do not attend

4. St. John’s will invoice the SHSM program. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PAY, and your training will be listed on your progress report by the end of the summer!

– Name, school, major and type of training you’d like to take

3. Wait three days for the activation and then complete online training on your own time.

4. Email SHSM@wcdsb.ca to confirm you’ve completed training
(It may take up to two weeks for it to appear on your SHSM record)
