Semester 1

Tuesday, October 30, 2018
Leadership, Problem Solving & Communication Skills Training
KW YMCA Outdoor Centre, St. Clements

During this one day session, you will work in groups focusing on initiative tasks which include leadership, problem solving & communication to build on these skills. Outdoor education staff will challenge you to understand how these 3 skills are connected, how they affect the workplace and other business situations.
You will also get a chance to participate in low and high rope tasks!

Bus departs at 8:25am and returns by 2:45pm
Training time runs from 9:30-2:00pm

Lunch is provided.
You will earn 1 elective certification.

2 DAYS: Tuesdays, Nov. 6  & 13, 2018
Standard First Aid & CPR-C Training
St. John’s Ambulance, Cambridge

Every employer wants to have a safe worker! Take this certification to learn how to assist other’s when in need. Plus, add it to your resume, as it’ll help you find a part time job! After completing this two day training session you will receive 2 certifications in CPR-C and Standard First Aid.

You must attend on both days to earn your certifications!

Training time is from 9:00am-3:30pm on both days

Lunch is provided.
You will earn 2 mandatory certifications

Concussion Awareness Training
Waterloo Sports Medicine

Are you interested to learn how the brain reacts to a concussion? Meet Mike Clermont, Physiotherapist from Waterloo Sports Medicine who has extensive training in all sports related Injuries. Mr. Clermont will facilitate this workshop to talk about what concussions are, how they happen and the symptoms. You will also focus on the recognition and assessment tools that health providers use. Prevention strategies and return to play guidelines will also be examined and explained.

Training is held at St. Benedict CSS.
Training time runs from 9:30am-1:30pm

Lunch is provided.
You will earn 1 elective certification.

Kinesiology (KIN) Lab Day
University of Waterloo

Kinesiology Lab Days is an annual high school outreach event for grade 11 & 12 students. This one-day program consists of mini-laboratory sessions on assessing, treating, and preventing movement-related illness and injury.

Students will be introduced to equipment and techniques used in many of Waterloo’s state-of-the-art kinesiology research and teaching labs. Lab Days experiences range from learning about athletic taping, concussions, stroke, cardio-vascular health, biomchanics and even measuring breath-by-breath oxygen uptake.

Officiating & Conflict Resolution Training
Kingsdale Community Centre, Kitchener

Did you know that Waterloo Region has a reputation for producing amazing Referees, including those who officiate at the Olympics? As a part time job, or full time career – there is a demand for Officials to monitor Sport.

Learning how to communicate effectively with athletes and resolve conflict is a key component of Sport, whether it is for Rec & Leisure, Minor or Major League Sports! Learn tips and tricks from the professionals with a focus on Basketball for this active and hands-on workshop.

Training runs from 9:30am-1:30pm.

You will earn 2 elective certifications

Attraction & Festival Event Management Training
Conestoga College, Doon Campus

Recreation, Sports Business, Art, Culture and Tourism are all connected through our $88.5 Billion Dollar Tourism industry in Canada
You will learn how to co-ordinate events by understanding what is needed for short and long term event plans. Remember! This can include everything from fundraising events, music festivals, the Olympics, Oktoberfest and so much more! By taking this training you will learn how to effectively plan and co-ordinate events.

Plus! You will understand how tourism is essential to sport, recreational, leisure and business purposes.

Training time is from 9:00am-2:00pm.
Lunch is provided.
You will earn 2 elective certifications.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

1. Call St. John’s Ambulance below to set up a training session (you cannot register online if SHSM is to pay for the training).

2. You MUST CALL St. John’s Ambulance (do not register online) to inform them:
– your name & school
– you’re a student of the Specialist High Skills Major program
– you’re a student with the Waterloo Catholic School Board
– you need CPR Level C & Standard First Aid

3. Attend training on the date you selected.
*NOTE: You will be charged a fee if you do not attend

4. St. John’s will invoice the SHSM program. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PAY, and your training will be listed on your progress report by the end of the summer!

3. Complete online training on your own time.

4. Email tara.fitzgerald@wcdsb.ca to confirm you’ve completed training
(Tara will then add it to your SHSM record)
