Leadership Skills Training
Training Provider: Common Compass

The focus of this training will be:
– Understanding the role of emotionally intelligent leadership in the workplace and developing skills in how to handle these dilemmas
– Developing communication skills for effective problem solving in workplace culture
– Understanding how inclusion can promote an effective workplace culture
– Understanding and implementing various leadership styles and approaches

Training time is from 9:00am-2:30pm.

Training will take place at St. Benedict Secondary School

Standard First Aid & CPR Level C Training
St. John’s Ambulance, Cambridge

Every employer wants to have a safe worker! Take this certification to learn how to assist other’s when in need.
Learn how to perform: adult, child and infant CPR, choking procedures for all ages, how to use barrier devices, AED (Automated External Defibrillation), and more.

Plus, add this training to your resume, as it will help you find a part time job!

Earn up to two SHSM certifications!

You must attend on both days to earn your certifications!

Event Coordination Training
Conestoga College, Kitchener

You will learn how to co-ordinate events by understanding what is needed for short and long term event planning. Remember! This can include everything from fundraising events, music festivals, the Olympics, Oktoberfest and so much more! By taking this training you will learn how to effectively plan and co-ordinate events.

Plus! You will understand how tourism is essential to sport, recreational, leisure and business purposes.

GPS Training

Locating points on a map and understanding how GPS works is a very valuable skill. Not only does it help you to measure and locate objects from a distance, but you will also learn about
topographical maps, positioning, and how GPS works in this 2 day training session.

Wrapping and Taping for Performance and Injury & Concussion Awareness
Catholic Education Centre, Kitchener

Interactive ,engaging 1/2 day session presented by Waterloo Sports Medicine Centre.

Come and learn about the latest in athletic taping, injury recognition/management and other current trends in sports medicine

Please come prepared to have your ankle taped, and bring athletic shorts (of an appropriate length) to change in to.

Ergonomics Training
Grand River Occupational Health and Safety, Cambridge

This course will provide workers with the appropriate work practices and workstation set-ups that will reduce ergonomic discomfort and stress associated with repetitive tasks or straining positions, and take effective steps to prevent the onset of Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs).

Course Outline:
– Introduction to Ergonomics
– Musculoskeletal Disorders
– Common causes of work-related MSDs
– Ergonomics Risk Factors
– Workstation Layout
– Controls and Preventive measures

Upon completion of the course, participants will be issued a three (3) years valid certificate showing proof of training.

Ladder Safety Training

Improper use of a ladder could cause significant injuries. Ladder safety training provide the necessary knowledge and skills required to reduce or eliminate worker injuries.

Learning Objectives:
– Upon completion of this course the trainee should be able to:
○ Identify various types and grades of ladders
○ Identify ladder hazards and common causes of accident
○ Understand the different applications of ladders and the importance of proper selection.
○ Know how to safely setup and use a ladder.  Know how to inspect, store, maintain and properly care for ladders.
○ Understand safe methods of climbing and descending ladders
○ Know how to store and maintain a ladder

Sport Nutrition and Fitness Plans
Provided by Juanita Reyes, Pony Up Fit
Parish Hall, Catholic Education Centre, Kitchener

This course will go back to basics and cover SMART goal setting to be used in the creation of a personalized fitness plan and meal plan. You will create a personalized plan that will be based around the four pillars of health: nutrition, exercise, relaxation and sleep.

The nutrition segment will cover healthy sources of macronutrients, micronutrients, and common supplements; pre and post workout nutrition; and calculating caloric intake based on fitness goals.

The exercise segment will cover basic anatomy of common muscle groups, exercises targeted to hit those muscle groups, types of training (H.I.I.T., strength training, cardiovascular training etc.), training splits and the importance of periodization.

Lastly, the importance of relaxation and sleep to performance and health will be addressed.

Earn up to two SHSM certifications!

HOW DOES IT WORK?

!!! SHSM will cover the cost of your CPR Level C & Standard First Aid!!!

*please note that the cost of the blended learning course will not be covered. Please call St. John Ambulance to register for the two-day course to take advantage of this certification free of cost.*

1. Call St. John’s Ambulance below to set up a training session (you cannot register online if SHSM is to pay for the training).

2. You MUST CALL St. John’s Ambulance (do not register online) to inform them:
– your name & school
– you’re a student of the Specialist High Skills Major program
– you’re a student with the Waterloo Catholic School Board
– you need CPR Level C & Standard First Aid

3. Attend training on the date you selected.
*NOTE: You will be charged a fee if you do not attend

4. St. John’s will invoice the SHSM program. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PAY, and your training will be listed on your progress report by the end of the summer!

 

HOW DOES IT WORK?

– Name, school, major and type of training you’d like to take

3. Wait three days for the activation and then complete online training on your own time.

4. Email SHSM@wcdsb.ca to confirm you’ve completed training
(It may take up to two weeks for it to appear on your SHSM record)
